[...] the well water was no longer good. It had an evil taste that was not exactly fetid nor exactly salty, and Ammi advised his friend to dig another well on higher ground to use till the soil was good again. Nahum, however, ignored the warning, for he had by that time become calloused to strange and unpleasant things. He and the boys continued to use the tainted supply, drinking it as listlessly and mechanically as they ate their meagre and ill-cooked meals and did their thankless and monotonous chores through the aimless days. There was something of stolid resignation about them all, as if they walked half in another world between lines of nameless guards to a certain and familiar doom.

It’s so easy to become locked in our routines, and no longer notice the little (and not so little!) changes. Often our Clients murmur in their sleep about the Parable of the Boiled Frog – though we feel that the point is better made in The Color Out Of Space by the mangled cattle and fragmented disappearing insane children.

What is it in your life that is slowly warping your mind into a horrific twisted mockery of itself while your family screams in languages not meant for the tongue of a human and your livelihood rots and….changes? Without you ever noticing any one individual thing? What have you “gotten used to” and don’t really notice anymore about your life?

it beats down your mind an’ then gets ye… burns ye up… in the well water… you was right about that… evil water… Zenas never come back from the well… can’t git away… draws ye… ye know summ’at’s comin’ but tain’t no use… I seen it time an’ agin senct Zenas was took…

What do you see “time and time agin” but just can’t take action on? What “strange and upleasant things” have you become “calloused to”? Don’t wait for your face to cave in to make a change!

Here’s an exercise we find helpful in Grounding our clients in The Moment.

Imagine that tomorrow your brain will be sucked out through your nose by a writhing mass of eyes and tentacles, your memories and very essence serving only to temporarily slake the Unholy Hunger of a God which was Ancient before this Universe was birthed. Imagine the the fiber and meat of you will be ground beneath one hundred million years of accumulated power and cold clammy flesh comprised of material not found in this Dimension. Imagine your wordless screams lost in the Chorus of billions crying out in anguish as your planet is consumed in the maw of Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos Which Ends All Beings.

Now, doesn’t that put things in perspective? Live each day expecting this, and the everyday moments of your life will flower in joyous recognition of their transient beauty. When every interaction you have with your fellow humans is colored with the knowledge that it may the Last Utterance of a Doomed Race, it really helps open and honest conversation – which so many of us need to work on. Here’s hoping this helps keep you Present and Engaged a little bit today – it may be your last chance!
